![]() Over a couple years, the notion went from a “wouldn’t that be crazy” aside to a serious possibility with a tiny budget behind it. Walker suggested he cover a Dave Matthews album. Drinks in hand, they’d commiserate about their shared, shameful past being of a certain age, DMB was a formative band for them, a deeply uncool thing to admit. It was him and an employee at his label, seeing each other at the holiday parties. The prospect of covering a DMB album began, as many things with Walker, as an off-handed joke. The Lillywhite Sessions never saw official release, and yet it lives on, with some fans calling it the best thing DMB ever did. Then Matthews re-recorded many of its songs for the 2002 album Busted Stuff. ![]() The Lillywhite Sessions leaked, prompting everyone to proclaim it a far more superior work to Everyday. Dave devotees mostly rejected that release, and the whole era became more convoluted from there. The recordings were deemed unsatisfactory, and Matthews wound up churning out 2001’s Everyday in just over a week instead. Intending to cut the successor to 1998’s Before These Crowded Streets, DMB entered the studio with Steve Lillywhite. Their fans adore them with a fervor reserved for generation-defining artists, while everyone else seems to be made physically ill by the mere mention of them.įor the former group, The Lillywhite Sessions is sacred territory. ![]() Dave Matthews Band might have more good songs than you remember, but they are still harshly divisive. The follow-up to Deafman Glance, as it turns out, is a full-album tribute to Dave Matthews Bands’ lost, unfinished album The Lillywhite Sessions.Įven with the people coming around to Matthews in recent times - most obviously with all the thinkpieces that accompanied the use of “Crash Into Me” in Lady Bird - the move of covering a whole DMB album is a bold one. And one of them is his long-standing defense of Dave Matthews Band. From praising Switchfoot’s guitar parts to saying Phil Collins-era Genesis is better than just about anyone, Walker’s got a whole collection of contrarian, yet earnest, takes. Within that, he’s also enthusiastically co-signed a whole lot of artists still awaiting their reappraisal, or artists who may never get one. Whether onstage or on Twitter, he’s prone to sarcastic quips and outlandish jokes, betraying a far more irreverent sense of humor than might’ve been readily evident in his earlier days. Throughout his career, there has been a divide between Walker’s music and his public persona. But he’s already back with another new collection, and it isn’t what any of us might’ve expected. A dark, difficult album - as a listening experience, and for Walker to make - one might’ve assumed it would take the prolific Walker a little while to release more music this time around. Ranking as one of our favorite albums of the year so far, Deafman Glance is also arguably Walker’s finest work. It marked the most significant transformation in an already shape-shifting career, finding Walker miles away from the folk troubadour we once knew as he delved into a battle-scarred sound indebted to Chicago post-rock and perhaps truer to himself than any of his past work. Back in May, Ryley Walker released his fourth album Deafman Glance. ![]() If you are thinking about investing in a domestic wind turbine, then there is more to consider than just the cost of the turbine itself. *5 A power inverter will also be required to convert the AC electricity to DC, as well as a bank of batteries. Micro domestic turbines are ideal to charge battery banks with electricity and cost around £800 (price at 2019). Some of the larger wind turbines feature artistic and architectural designs that offer an aesthetic as well as functional benefit. Standalone wind turbines cost between £9,900 and £19,000 for a 2.5kW system, while a 6kW version is likely to be between £21,000 and £30,000. However, because they are more likely to invite planning permission objections, they are not suitable for urban areas. Standalone wind turbines generate more energy than roof-mounted alternatives. Standalone wind turbines, also called free-standing wind turbines or pole-mounted wind turbines, are more effective when situated on top of a hill, away from obstructions and turbulence. However, roof-mounted wind turbines are typically small and may not generate enough electricity to meet your requirements. This type of turbine is easier to install and cheaper than other versions, costing up to £3,000 for a 1kW system. The height advantage of roof-mounted turbine systems provides the necessary wind force to generate electricity, feeding it directly to a property. ![]() There are three main types of turbine systems to cater for in the domestic market: Roof mounted *2Ī HIES installer will be able to offer you expert advice on the specific requirements of your property. Garrett acknowledges that all new technologies like vertical axis turbines face challenges, but he believes that the technology is now at a stage where the challenges of previous generations can be overcome.Domestic wind turbines can range in size from 400W to 100kW – which one will meet your requirements depends on the size of property, the amount of electricity you want it to generate and how energy efficient your home is.Ī 1.5kW wind turbine situated in an area with an average wind speed of 14mph would be sufficient to meet the needs of a home requiring 300kWh per month, for example. If a customer sells energy back to the grid, the payback time for the turbine would be around 9 years. Garrett told Springwise that a ballpark figure for the manufacture and installation of the AuraGen is around £7,000 (around €8,250). One of the benefits of the AuraGen design is its low cost of installation. Website: /programme/young-innovators/Ī key consideration for any home energy system is the cost. Springwise has also spotted a portable wind turbine weighing only 10 kilogrammes. Another designer has developed a wind turbine ‘wall’ that can be tailored to the aesthetic of each home. The AuraGen is not the only domestic wind power solution spotted by Springwise. Thanks to the AuraGen design, Garrett received recognition as a winner of this year’s UK Young Innovators Awards. He told Springwise that his experiences working in the wind stuck with him and gave him the idea for a roof-mounted wind turbine. The idea for the AuraGen came to Garrett as a teenager when he worked on scaffolding and rooftops with his dad. This latter point means that the AuraGen could potentially be used to charge electric vehicles overnight. This increases stability, meaning that the turbine itself can be wider, leading to greater power generation.Ĭompared to solar panels, wind turbines have a much higher power density and can operate at night. This is an important benefit as, by using the height of the house, the design does not require a tall support structure. ![]() In fact, the shape of the roof enhances the turbine’s performance, acting like an aerofoil to increase the velocity of air going through the turbine.Ī frame is used to directly attach the turbine to the roof. The new turbine is omni-directional, which means it works no matter which way the wind is blowing, and the technology is tailored to work most effectively on pitched roofs. Moreover, the design is simple-reducing maintenance requirements-and offers good power performance. The AuraGen’s unique design aims to minimise a phenomenon called ‘dynamic stall’ where factors such as wind shear and turbulence place a heavy load on turbine blades – reducing their lifespan. To reverse this situation, UK engineer Joe Garrett has developed the AuraGen – a new vertical axis wind turbine designed to be mounted on homes and commercial buildings. But while solar panels on domestic homes are an increasingly common sight in urban and suburban areas, far fewer houses are installed with wind turbines. ![]() Spotted: For homeowners looking to power their house with renewable energy, wind power offers a more efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to solar panels. This film was not one I had caught, a classic period kung-fu film, directed by the legendary Woo-ping Yuen. I, like a lot of his fans, know his more modern films like Rumble In The Bronx, First Strike, Project A, and Supercop. I am a pretty significant Jackie Chan fan, or I at least thought I was until I actually spent the time to read through his filmography. Snake in Eagles Shadow So it is probably anti-climactic to say this on the first film of the fest… but this was my favorite movie of the fest. There was also delicious coffee from Grindcore House and awesome ice cream from my current employer, LITTLE BABY’S ICE CREAM. SAD TROMBONE!! While I yet again didn’t win anything, it was still a great time, fun was had, and the people cheered. I have never won save one time, when I won a poster… which I already owned. From free tickets to local events, to free films, to posters both classic and more recent, the prizes never fail to inspire great envy in me. ![]() ![]() I have to say, each year the prizes at both fests improve so greatly that it is almost worth the price of admission just for a chance to win a prize. After the announcements, delivered with their usual silly undertones, was the prize giveaway. There were announcements of upcoming events like the Starman/Escape From New York double feature as well as the Star Trek 3/Dune double feature and even a night dedicated to Kaiju films and shows. Instead, the most challenging film of the day may also have been the most interesting (We will get to that below).Īs usual, the event started off with no lack of fanfare. Not that difficult is not good, but there were no films this year that grossed me out totally. In fact, though the films contained as much nudity and sexual violence as any year, the overall tone of this year’s fest felt a lot more palatable. This year was a similarly eclectic mix, though perhaps a slightly more accessible selection. The Ex-Fest has always been a strange mix of films: some obscure, some classic, some dark, some fun, some completely disturbing. ![]() You can check out my review of last year’s fest here, where I also give some history of not only the fest but also of Exhumed Films as a whole. Exhumed Films has been doing the Ex-Fest for four years, inviting their many fans and devotees to a twelve-hour orgy of exploitation films. Ex-Fest 2014 was yet another explosion of sex and violence and fun. ![]()

Go too fast or lean to one side too much, and you trip, thereby damaging your cargo.
